Sheet Metal Industry
8403 Arlington Boulevard, Suite 310 ♦ Fairfax, VA 22031-4601
SASMI was created by the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association and concerned contractors in the industry who saw the need for a program of this kind. It grew out of local collective bargaining negotiations and now is an industry-wide institution. Even though it was created by labor and management, SASMI is independent of both and is governed by a Board of Trustees. Half of the Trustees are selected by SMWIA and half are elected by participating contractors. SASMI operates under a trust agreement which requires that all decisions be made in the best interest of SASMI participants. Its day-to-day operations are carried out under the supervision of an Administrator who is appointed by the Trustees. The Trustees make all policy decisions and the final determination regarding benefit appeals.
Why was SASMI Established
Every sheet metal worker covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement [CBA] containing provisions for SASMI contributions, or a participation agreement requiring contributions to SASMI, automatically becomes a participant in SASMI.
SASMI is financed by employer contributions. All contributions to SASMI are made by employers in accordance with their collective bargaining or related agreements with SMWIA or local unions of SMWIA. SASMI funds are handled in accordance with the strict rules of the trust, ERISA and other federal laws.
